FRESNO, Calif. ( KSEE/KGPE ) — The Fresno Mission had its grand opening of its Family Center in their City Center Campus offering more resources to families in need.

“The hardest part of my job is running into the limitations, running into the limitations of knowing that you need more help. There’s another girl being trafficked. There’s another kid without some place to go. There’s another family that’s sleeping in some place that you couldn’t bear seeing your family sleep in,” CEO of the Fresno Mission Matthew Dildine said.

The Fresno Mission Family Center in City Center is dedicated to supporting families in crisis.

“We have a lot of folks experiencing homelessness, food insecurity, mental health issues, drug and substance abuse issues. And a lot of the times they have to go all the way Downtown to get the services that they need,” Tyler Maxwell, Fresno City Councilmember District 4 said.

The new facility, located in the old Sierra Hospital Campus at Blackstone and Dakota, houses 73 rooms and ensures more families will have access to support services and resources, all under one roof.

“Our vision is for really people to look at Fresno as that city that cares for its people in crisis, that cares for its poor, that cares for its homeless, that cares for that kid who doesn’t have any place else to go like no other city in the nation,” Dildine said.

Dildine said the center had its setbacks.

Last year the center faced multiple break-ins and theft of hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of copper wiring and pipes.

He said unlike any shelter- people can stay for as long as they need.

“The longer somebody is with us, the more services that we can give to them that gives them a better platform or a better trajectory to living a life of abundance and self-sustainability,” Dildine said.

Maxwell said the center is open to anyone and everyone.

“They have a free grocery store that’s open throughout the week. They have a cafe; they have a space for kids. And it doesn’t matter who you are, your background or your story, you are welcome at the city center. And that’s the beautiful thing about it,” Maxwell said.
