Nepal Sees India At The Forefront Of June Tourist Arrivals, As The US Overtakes China To Secure A Powerful Second Place - Travel And Tour World
Friday, July 4, 2025
In June, India continued to hold its dominant position as the leading source of international tourists to Nepal, with an impressive 32,662 visitors arriving by air. This strong showing from Indian travelers played a crucial role in contributing to the overall tourism numbers for the month, as Nepal welcomed a total of 76,425 tourists in June. According to the latest data from the Nepal Tourism Board, the influx of Indian tourists highlights the ongoing appeal of Nepal as a top destination for travelers from across the border. India’s consistent presence at the top of Nepal’s tourism rankings underscores the close ties between the two countries and the ease of travel that continues to drive a high volume of visitors year after year. This substantial arrival from India not only bolstered Nepal’s tourism industry in June but also reinforced its position as one of the most popular destinations in the region.
While India remained firmly in first place, the United States surpassed China to secure second place, with 9,696 visitors arriving by air. China, which held the position as Nepal’s second-largest source of tourists from 2014 to 2020, saw a significant drop in numbers, with just 6,736 Chinese nationals arriving by air in June. Following China in the rankings were Bangladesh and the United Kingdom, with 5,449 and 2,284 visitors respectively.
The shift in Nepal’s tourism landscape is especially evident when examining the long-term trends. China’s numbers, which had been steadily increasing for years, have been on the decline since 2021. In contrast, the United States has made significant strides, now occupying the second spot for tourist arrivals to Nepal, a position that was previously dominated by China. This change highlights the evolving dynamics of Nepal’s international tourism, influenced by factors such as geopolitics, travel restrictions, and changing travel preferences.
India’s dominant position in Nepal’s tourism sector is not a new development. The country has consistently been the top source of foreign visitors, a trend that shows no signs of changing in the near future. This enduring relationship between the two nations is bolstered by shared cultural, historical, and geographical ties, making Nepal an attractive destination for Indian tourists. The ease of travel between the two countries, combined with Nepal’s rich cultural heritage, natural beauty, and spiritual significance, ensures a continuous flow of visitors from India year-round.
As Nepal continues to benefit from its strong connection with India, it also seeks to diversify its tourism base. Efforts have been made to attract tourists from other parts of the world, with mixed results. The United States, for example, has emerged as a key market for Nepal, with the number of American visitors steadily increasing over the years. This is likely due to several factors, including increased air connectivity, growing interest in adventure tourism, and the global appeal of Nepal’s unique blend of culture, history, and natural beauty.
China’s decline in visitor numbers has been one of the most notable shifts in Nepal’s tourism patterns in recent years. From being the second-largest source of tourists, China’s numbers have dropped, which is partly due to the easing of restrictions on travel after the COVID-19 pandemic. The impact of the pandemic, combined with travel restrictions, has affected the flow of Chinese tourists into Nepal. However, despite this drop, Nepal still continues to attract a healthy number of Chinese visitors, albeit at a reduced rate.
The UK, another key source of visitors, continues to contribute significantly to Nepal’s tourism. With 2,284 arrivals in June, British nationals remain one of the top international tourists to Nepal, drawn by the country’s trekking routes, spiritual experiences, and scenic landscapes. The UK has long been an important market for Nepal, particularly for those seeking adventure and trekking in the Himalayan region.
Bangladesh also contributes to Nepal’s tourism sector, ranking fourth in the list of countries with the most air arrivals in June. The proximity of Bangladesh to Nepal and the shared cultural and religious ties have made it an important market for the country. As Nepal continues to enhance its infrastructure and tourism offerings, the number of Bangladeshi visitors is likely to increase in the coming years.
In terms of overall tourism, the first half of the year saw a slight decline in the number of air arrivals to Nepal. With a total of 577,000 air arrivals, the country saw a minor 0.91% decrease compared to the same period in the previous year. This reduction in tourist numbers could be attributed to various factors, including global travel challenges and the lingering effects of the pandemic. However, the numbers for 2024 show a near-identical total of 577,689 tourists, suggesting a stable demand for Nepal as a travel destination despite the challenges.
The slight dip in arrivals is not alarming, as Nepal remains a popular destination for tourists, especially those seeking adventure, spirituality, and natural beauty. The country is renowned for its trekking routes, including the Annapurna Circuit, Everest Base Camp, and Langtang Valley, which continue to attract thousands of visitors each year. Additionally, Nepal’s rich cultural heritage, historical sites, and religious landmarks, including Lumbini, the birthplace of Lord Buddha, also contribute to its appeal.
While the first half of the year showed a small decrease in air arrivals, Nepal’s tourism industry remains resilient. With a focus on expanding its global reach and improving infrastructure, the country is well-positioned to recover and grow its tourism sector in the second half of 2024 and beyond. The ongoing trends highlight the importance of diversifying Nepal’s tourism markets and continuing to build strong connections with both traditional and emerging markets to ensure long-term growth and sustainability for the industry.
