NAWOJ seeks punishment for school authorities behind torture of 14-year-old maid
The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Rivers State Chapter, has condemned the horrific abuse of a 14-year-old maid to the principal of Christ Ambassador International Mission School, Eagle Island in Obio-Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State, where teachers allegedly flogged and burned her body with a hot iron over theft allegations.
In a strongly-worded statement, NAWOJ Rivers Chairperson, Susan Serekara-Nwikhana, said it is quite disturbing and utterly condemnable for a principal to order the burning of her maid with a hot iron over theft allegations.
Recall that a disturbing viral video from Port Harcourt on Tuesday showed the 14-year-old female maid with severe burns from the school principal and the teachers. The police have, however, arrested the principal and some of his accomplices.
Reacting, the NAWOJI chairperson demanded strict sanctions for the school principal, as well as revocation of the school’s license.
She said, “This is utterly condemnable. What is ₦30,000 compared to a child’s life? We are shocked that in this 21st century, such medieval torture is being inflicted on a minor based on mere accusations. The mother, pastors, and teachers involved must face the full wrath of the law.”
She criticised the religious leaders involved in the dastardly acts, saying: “Which God told them it was the girl who stole the money? We have too many pastors in Nigeria spreading confusion rather than truth. This reckless finger-pointing has now endangered a child’s life.”
She demanded the prosecution of all teachers involved in the torture.
The NAWOJI chairperson also called for an Investigation of the pastor who allegedly instigated the false accusation, requesting a psychological evaluation.
She further called for support for the traumatised victim.
