Navy praised for maritime security achievements at anniversary event
The Nigerian Navy celebrated its 69th anniversary at the Naval Dockyard, Lagos, with stakeholders lauding its operational achievements and fleet expansion during a ceremonial sunset and dinner.
Minister of State for Defence, Dr Bello Matawalle, commended the Navy for its unwavering efforts in securing Nigeria’s maritime domain over the past 69 years.
Matawalle unveiled the logo for the Nigerian Navy Special Operations Command (NNSOC), a rapid deployment force designed to execute high-risk, land-based missions in support of internal security.
Highlighting the Navy’s impact, Matawalle noted its role in reducing oil theft, maritime crimes, and other illegal activities in Nigerian waters. He described the Navy as “an indispensable guardian of Nigerian prosperity” and praised its vigilance, resilience, and patriotism.
Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, emphasised the significance of the ceremony in recognising the Navy’s service excellence. He outlined recent achievements, including intensified maritime operations against oil theft and piracy, regulation of crude oil loading platforms, and the establishment of new operational commands.
Ogalla also announced the commissioning of new helicopters and fast patrol boats, with additional vessels and equipment expected from Turkey, China, France, and Singapore by 2025.
Representing the Lagos State Governor, Chief of Staff Tayo Akinmade Ayinde highlighted the Navy’s role in safeguarding oil and financial assets. He called for continued support to enhance maritime security and internal operations amid Nigeria’s evolving security challenges.
