Nana Oye Bampoe Addo's Engagement with Ghanaian Diaspora and Anti-Corruption Stance

Nana Oye Bampoe Addo, Ghana's Deputy Chief of Staff, recently concluded a significant visit to Vienna, Austria, where she represented the nation at two pivotal events in June 2025. Her engagements underscored Ghana's unwavering commitment to both good governance and the preservation of its rich cultural heritage abroad.
On June 16, 2025, Ms. Bampoe Addo addressed the First Resumed Sixteenth Session of the United Nations Convention Against Corruption (UNCAC) Implementation Review Group and the Open-Ended Intergovernmental Working Group on the Prevention of Corruption. During this international forum, she presented Ghana's comprehensive anti-corruption strategy, emphasizing its robust legislative frameworks. She cited the 1992 Constitution alongside key laws such as the Criminal Offences Act, Financial Intelligence Centre Act, Office of the Special Prosecutor Act, Whistleblower Act, and Witness Protection Act. Further illustrating Ghana's proactive measures, Ms. Bampoe Addo introduced the National Anti-Corruption Action Plan (NACAP), noting that NACAP II is set for launch in September 2025. This launch will coincide with a new initiative, “Operation Recover All Loot” (ORAL), designed to reclaim state resources.
Ms. Bampoe Addo highlighted impressive achievements in the fight against corruption. The Special Prosecutor's office successfully recovered over $340,000 and blocked inflated contracts, saving the state $11.5 million. Additionally, the Audit Service reclaimed a significant $1.55 billion between 2020 and 2023. Beyond these financial recoveries, Ghana is deeply committed to citizen engagement, with over 15 million Ghanaians reached through various anti-corruption awareness programs. To enhance oversight and accountability, a Governance Advisory Council is being established to monitor compliance with anti-corruption measures and publish annual reports on governance issues. Extensive reforms also include prohibiting political appointees from acquiring state assets, introducing the Conduct of Public Officers Bill, setting up special courts for corruption cases, and strengthening the Auditor-General's powers. Ghana's dedication to financial integrity and combating money laundering was further demonstrated through digital innovations like the Ghana Electronic Procurement System (GHANEPS) and E-VAT, which have boosted VAT revenue by 28%. In her closing remarks, Ms. Bampoe Addo urged global solidarity against corruption, asserting that it “has no place in Ghana’s future.” The UNCAC Implementation Review Group’s ongoing efforts are crucial for strengthening anti-corruption initiatives globally, facilitating peer reviews, and aligning domestic laws with international standards.
Parallel to her anti-corruption discourse, Nana Oye Bampoe Addo also participated in a significant cultural event on June 14, 2025, at the Vienna International Centre. She extended heartfelt congratulations to Asanteman Austria and their newly enstooled Ohemaa, including the Vienna Hemaa (Gyaase Hemaa) and Adonten Hemaa of Austria. This celebration, which coincided with her official engagements, served as a platform for her to address the Ghanaian diaspora in Austria. She underscored the vital roles of leadership, cohesion, and community service in Ghanaian culture and urged the diaspora to foster solidarity, support one another, and actively contribute to community development. Ms. Bampoe Addo commended their vibrant involvement in Austria and their valuable contributions to both their home nation and host country. She particularly encouraged the youth to embrace their cultural roots while looking forward with ambition and a spirit of service.
The Deputy Chief of Staff acknowledged the dedicated efforts of the Asanteman Austria Executive Council and Ghana’s Ambassador to Austria, H.E. Matilda Alomatu Osei-Agyeman, for their relentless commitment to the Ghanaian community abroad. Ambassador Osei-Agyeman, in her remarks, highlighted that the Constitution of Ghana guarantees every individual the right to enjoy, practice, and promote their culture, language, and traditions, subject to constitutional provisions. She emphasized chieftaincy as a cherished institution and a protector of customary values and norms, with its establishment, roles, and jurisdictions outlined within the constitutional framework. Ms. Bampoe Addo concluded her address to the diaspora by encouraging them to renew their dedication to core Ghanaian values: respect for traditions, unity in diversity, and an unyielding pursuit of excellence. The Embassy of Ghana expressed its honor in hosting the Deputy Chief of Staff at this momentous event, celebrating the rich cultural heritage and leadership within the Ghanaian community.
