Distributor-exhibitor Akshaye Rathi has started a weekly podcast called The Filmy Hustle and the episode featuring Murad Khetani and Siddharth Roy Kapur threw light on production challenges, changing tastes of moviegoers post-pandemic and a lot more. Murad Khetani, who has made blockbusters like Kabir Singh (2019), Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 (2022) and Animal (2023), talked about his beginnings as a film producer at the very beginning of the show.

He explained how he got into film production with The Shaukeens (2014). Murad Khetani then said, “When I signed the writer and director of Mubarakan (2017), it was supposed to have a budget of Rs. 7 crores. We needed two young actors. We met a lot of new actors. The role was such that everyone was interested in just one role, not the other.”
He added, “Somehow, the script reached Sony Pictures. They called me for a meeting. They informed me that they loved the script and asked if they could produce the film with me. I agreed. I informed them about the casting problem. Then, Milap Zaveri gave the idea to make the two characters look identical. So, it became a double role. So, initially, the siblings shown in the film were two different people and not looking similar.”
Murad Khetani exulted, “Anees Bazmee also came on board. We started with the idea to make a film for Rs. 7 crores. Eventually, it became a Rs. 70 crores venture!”
The double role was played by Arjun Kapoor in Mubarakan. It also starred Anil Kapoor, Ileana Dcruz, Athiya Shetty, Neha Sharma, Karan Kundra and Ratna Pathak Shah in the lead roles with Sanjay Kapoor in a special appearance.
Murad Khetani also opened up on how he had no idea about film production and learned everything on the go while producing The Shaukeens, starring Akshay Kumar, Anupam Kher, Annu Kapoor, Piyush Mishra and Lisa Haydon.
