Multiple fires reported across different regions

Several incidents involving fires have been reported across different locations, prompting investigations and emergency responses. In Middlesbrough, authorities are investigating a suspected arson attack that occurred on Friday, May 9, in Coulby Newham. According to reports, a group of youths allegedly started a fire in bushes behind residential properties on Sunnyside, which then spread to fences and nearly reached the homes. Sergeant Chris Swales of Coulby Newham Police emphasized the danger, stating that the fire narrowly missed igniting a gas bottle from a barbecue, which could have resulted in a significant explosion. He also urged parents to educate their children about the risks associated with lighting fires and warned that such criminal behavior would not be tolerated. Additional patrols were planned for the area, and residents were encouraged to share any information or concerns with the officers. It is also believed that the same youths started other fires near Hollowfield, which were reported to Cleveland Fire Brigade.
In Exeter, Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service responded to a fire at an electrical sub-station just off Fore Street on the morning of Sunday, May 11. The fire led to the evacuation of homes and left hundreds without power. Initially, two fire engines were dispatched, but the situation required additional resources, leading to the deployment of four more engines and a command support unit from Honiton. At one point, over 900 properties were without power. Firefighters worked to extinguish the fire and protect nearby properties using foam and thermal imaging cameras. Riverside Leisure Centre was set up as a respite center for displaced residents. Cordons were established, and the public was advised to avoid the area. The fire resulted in the destruction of the external electrical sub-station and affected four adjacent properties with fire and heat. Two crews remained on the scene to address hotspots in the roof void of an adjacent property, utilizing breathing apparatus, foam jets, hose reel jets, and a thermal imaging camera. National Grid was working to restore power, estimating that the remaining 281 affected properties would have power restored by 9 pm on Sunday, May 11.
