MP Peter Salasya Arrested in Nanyuki

Mumias East Member of Parliament Peter Salasya has reported a series of alarming incidents, including an alleged ambush and abduction by individuals claiming to be DCI officers. According to Salasya, these events began after he addressed a rally in Isiolo. He detailed the initial ambush, stating that his convoy was attacked by masked men armed with AK-47 rifles who identified themselves as officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI). The assailants reportedly opened fire on his convoy, disarmed his bodyguards, and confiscated their weapons.
Salasya recounted the events on his X account, explaining that the attackers intercepted his convoy along the Isiolo-Nanyuki highway. He stated that multiple unidentified vehicles opened fire, deflating the tires of his vehicle and immobilizing it. The MP asserted that the armed men, numbering about 15, disarmed his security team before taking him into custody. He managed to flee into nearby bushes with the help of one of his security personnel, but the attackers continued their pursuit.
The MP also described a previous incident where armed men in civilian clothes and masks attempted to arrest him at a Mombasa hotel. These men claimed to be police officers but lacked proper identification and a warrant. The vehicle they used also had no number plates, raising further suspicion. Local residents intervened, preventing the arrest. Salasya believes this earlier event was a politically motivated act of intimidation related to his political ambitions, including his announced 2027 presidential bid.
Salasya has questioned the motives behind the attacks, particularly noting that he has refrained from directly criticizing the government in his recent rallies and has focused instead on promoting peace and progress. He expressed concern for his safety, stating that he was being taken to an unknown location and urging relevant authorities and the public to take note of the situation. His lawyer, Kennedy Echesa, added that Salasya’s vehicle was shot at, and he was handcuffed before being forced into the attackers' vehicle.
Despite the threats and attacks, Salasya has maintained his intention to vie for the Presidency of Kenya in the 2027 General Election. He stated that his decision was made after wide consultations and careful consideration of the nation's state, driven by a desire to offer transformative leadership focused on industrial growth, economic empowerment, and social justice.
