Movistar Plus+ Pledges To Remain "Driving Force" For Spanish Industry

Published 8 hours ago4 minute read

Movistar Plus+ has again moved to calm fears over its future in original films and TV shows, with senior leaders saying the company remains a “magnet for creative talent” in Spain.

Movistar Plus+ CEO Daniel Domenjó last week addressed an audience of more than 400 Spanish industry leaders and pledged to keep the Spanish content giant as the “driving force” of the local creative sector.

This was at least in part a response to the ongoing concerns about Movistar Plus+’s appetite for original content following the shock exit of the much-respected content chief Domingo Corral. Domenjó, the the CEO and co-founder of Spanish producer Satisfaction Iberia, was installed as Movistar Plus+ CEO just weeks before Corral’s exit.

His the tone at the Teatro Real in Madrid was clearly one of reassurance, with the exec saying: “We want to continue being the driving force of the industry, the magnet for creative talent in this country. Movistar Plus+ must be the home of fiction, entertainment, and sports. That’s what this adventure is about: building on the excellent work we’ve done in the past to project a future in which we reach new audiences, with new formats and new genres that allow us to attract subscribers we don’t yet have.”

He said supporting local content was Movistar Plus+’s “roadmap,” and added: “We want to break new ground and reach new heights in entertainment, fiction, and sports. We must remain a benchmark, relevant and original.”

The likes of comedian and actor Leo Harlem, Querer Alauda Ruiz de Azúa, The Other Side writer Berto Romero and soccer commentator Álvaro Benito attended the event, with Movistar Plus+ positioning it as the beginning of a new phase for the company.

Spain has been hailed as a creative and production services hotspot over recent years, with investment in the local sector coming from the likes of Netflix and Amazon MGM Studios, both got local and international projects. However, talk to sources within the Spanish creative sector and you’ll often hear Movistar Plus+ named as the player ordering the most challenging and exciting films and TV shows.

The mood music in Spain changed when it was revealed that Domingo Corral, Director of Fiction & Entertainment at Spain’s Movistar Plus+, was leaving the Spanish company. Numerous industry figures and stars such as Javier Bardem and Penélope Cruz then co-signed an emotionally-charged letter urging Movistar Plus+ to double down on its commitments to the sector.

They will have been calmed by the words of Movistar Plus+ President Javier de Paz, who said: “We need a place to generate and tell our own stories, our own histories, and this is undoubtedly one of the main means to do so. This is what we strive for every day at Movistar Plus+.

He noted that since 2017, Telefónica’s platform has invested €1.3B ($1.5B) in series, entertainment, documentaries, and sports that is primarily recorded in languages native to Spain. This had generated 140,000 jobs, “both direct and indirect,” in 15 different autonomous communities, he added.

Movistar Plus+’s proclamations this week are the second time since Corral’s exit that its execs have made a direct pledge to the industry. In May at the Cannes Film Festival, Movistar Plus+’s Head of Original Films & Spanish Cinema, Guillermo Farré, told Deadline it would stay the course when it comes to original film.

“The goal is clear: The direction of what Domingo started works on many different levels,” he said. “It works in terms of the numbers that we have, and it’s a clear model to create movies and series that resonate in a very crowded world,” adding: “The Movistar Plus+ model is going to continue that direction.”

Movistar Plus+ was a key player at Cannes this year, with Óliver Laxe’s Sirât and Carla Simón’s Romería both playing in competition. The Telefónica-owned company’s auteur-driven slate also included Los Tigres from Alberto Rodríguez, Alauda Ruiz de Azúa’s Los Domingos, and Cinco Minutos Más, starring and written by Berto Romero and helmed by Javier Ruiz Calder.

This week’s comments take in TV, too, and come weeks after Movistar Plus+ Manager of Original Fiction Content Production Susana Herreras outlined the existing slate at Conecta Fiction & Entertainment, but that talk did not address the post-Corral era in any depth.

On the TV front, Movistar Plus+ is known for the likes of miniseries Querer, Rodrigo Sorogoyen’s Antidisturbios and action thriller La Unidad. On the current slate are the likes of Eurovision Song Contest drama miniseries La Canción (The Song) and psychological thriller series Los Sin Nombre (The Nameless), which debuted in June.
