Morning interview: Hammond Scottish festival

Published 13 hours ago2 minute read

WATERTOWN, New York (WWNY) - Ah, summertime. Time to slip on a wool kilt, pick up a 200 pound stone and maybe toss a caber or two.

In other words, you’re a Scotsman or woman, or want to be.

Here’s your chance: July 12, from 9 AM to 5 PM, the annual Scottish Festival returns to Hammond.

It includes a 5K walk/run. You must wear a kilt to participate. There will be kilts available to rent. You can sign up on the day of the race, or in advance at www.hammondmuseum.com.

There will be music all day, including bagpipes, and ‘highland games’ which will feature the tossing the caber. (Think of it as picking up and throwing a junior version of a telephone pole.)

There will also be food on hand, and vendors selling a variety of products.

Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for kids 6 to 16, and children 5 and under get in free.

Organizers suggest you bring cash, because not all vendors take cards.

The festival is right on Route 37, as you come into Hammond. You can’t miss it.

Two of the organizers of the event, Daven Brigham, festival athletic director and Chris McRoberts, festival board member, joined Beth on 7 News This Morning Thursday with details of the festival. Watch by clicking on the picture above this post.
