Military Operations and Anti-Terrorism Efforts in Nigeria

Troops of Operation Safe Haven (OPSH) and the 3rd Division of the Nigerian Army conducted a raid on bandits' hideouts in Teng village, Qua’anpan Local Government Area of Plateau State on May 23, 2025. The operation resulted in the death of one bandit and the recovery of arms and ammunition. According to Major Samson Zhakom, spokesperson for the military formation, the raid was part of ongoing efforts to eliminate arm-carrying criminals from Plateau State. During the operation, the troops overwhelmed the criminals, forcing them to retreat. One bandit was killed in the exchange of gunfire, and traces of blood indicated that others sustained gunshot wounds. The troops recovered one AK-47 rifle, one AK-47 magazine, and 11 rounds of 7.62 mm (Special) ammunition, which are now in the custody of the troops for further action.
Chief of Army Staff Lt. Gen. Olufemi Oluyede announced that the Nigerian Army will induct more combat enablers into its operations to combat Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists, banditry, kidnapping, and other forms of criminality. Speaking at the end of the 2025 COAS first bi-annual conference in Maiduguri, Borno State, Oluyede emphasized that the strength of the Nigerian Army lies in the will of its soldiers. He noted that the conference identified areas for improvement and proposed practical solutions to enhance the army's effectiveness. The Nigerian Army will implement these measures in current and future engagements. Oluyede urged officers and soldiers to show exemplary leadership and mentor the next generation. He also charged them to neutralize terrorists and criminals and commended President Bola Tinubu, state governors, top army officers, soldiers, paramilitary and other security agencies, traditional rulers, religious leaders, and all stakeholders for their support.
The Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru, stated that Nigeria is making significant progress against insecurity, with improvements in safety and community restoration. Security forces have made considerable advancements in counter-terrorism operations. Additionally, troops foiled a terrorists attack in Damboa, killing 16 fighters, as reported by Thisday on May 24, 2025. The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, has ordered commanding officers and troops of Operation Hadin Kai to be ruthless.
