is looking back on a frightening health scare she experienced while hosting the 2022 NBC special Miley’s New Year’s Eve Party.

“I had a pretty traumatic experience on a show that I was doing with [executive producer] [] when I was doing my New Year’s show,” the “Flowers” hitmaker, 32, said on Apple Music’s “The Zane Lowe Show” on Wednesday, May 21. “I had a medical emergency. I had an ovarian cyst rupture, which we didn’t know exactly what was going on, but it was pretty traumatic, cause it was extremely excruciating.”

Miley rang in 2023 by cohosting a special on NBC with godmother in Miami. Miley’s New Year’s Eve Party featured musical performances, comedy sketches and special guests like , and . The 2022 special marked Miley’s second year in a row hosting the event after she previously hosted with Pete Davidson in 2021, although NBC has not run the show since 2022.

Miley told Zane, 51, that she “did the show anyway,” but it was “really, really hard” on her.

The Hannah Montana alum said the experience, which she had not revealed publicly until this interview, was a wake-up call that nearly made her quit music. However, a conversation with Lorne, 80, made her change her mind.

“I had dinner with Lorne and he said something that now has stuck with me,” she explained. “He goes, ‘Six months — everybody has six months to feel sorry for themselves and then we start to rebuild.’”

She continued, “And it was Christmas by then and that was New Year’s, so I was expired on my amount of time that I was able to shut down. He’s like, ‘You have no idea how many artists have sat in this chair and told me that they were quitting music. Everyone does this. Everyone has these traumatic experiences.’”

Miley concluded, “What I’ve always realized is that it will quit me before I ever quit it. That’s not in the cards for me.”

Despite her 2023 medical scare, Miley has shown no signs of slowing down in her career. She won her first Grammy Award for “Flowers” in 2024 and is now continuing her momentum with the release of her ninth studio album, Something Beautiful, on May 30. And though it’s been more than a decade since Miley went on a headlining tour, a source exclusively told In Touch in November 2024 that she could make a comeback this year.

“The conversation around Miley’s touring plans in 2025 has heated up during the last two months,” the insider said. “It’s been years since Miley has done a full-scale tour. Instead, she has surgically focused on songwriting and recording and she’s been rewarded with huge success on that front. But facing the fans in giant arenas on multiple continents can make her a fortune – and at some point, it’s just irresponsible to turn your back on that kind of money.”

The source continued, “Miley is in the creative exploration phase of figuring out what her next tour will look like. This isn’t about topping Taylor Swift or Pink. It’s about reinventing what a giant pop concert actually looks and sounds like. If Miley can find a way to truly innovate with that kind of experience, she’ll go through with it.”
