Published 10 hours ago2 minute read

The eight-strong delegation will meet with various film industry associations advocating for creative professionals including studio operatives, writers, directors and actors. The MEPs’ objective is to learn more about the impact of digital transformative technologies on the filmmaking creative process. They will hear views from both sides of the industry on the state of the audiovisual and creative sector, the remuneration of creators, and screen actors’ working conditions.

In addition to discussions with representatives from the music industry, the visit will include a meeting with a public media broadcaster to discuss the role of public media service providers in the digital era and ways to tackle disinformation.

"I’m honoured to visit the beating heart of the world’s film industry – a place that stands for innovation and new technologies. But we’re also here to learn about challenges such as studio working conditions, digital transformation, creators’ rights, disinformation and how to keep creative exchange alive in the face of new tariffs", said Ms Nela Riehl, who is leading the delegation.

Background

Over the last decade, a good deal of legislation has been passed to regulate the fast-evolving digital environment with its profound implications for the EU’s cultural and creative sectors and industries. Parliament’s Committee on Culture and Education has been central in shaping many of these laws, in particular the revised Audiovisual Media Services Directive (2018) and the European Media Freedom Act (2024). The Committee also issued opinions on the copyright package and the Digital Services Act.

This visit is of particular relevance in the context of the upcoming Commission proposal for the next Creative Europe programme.
