Marvel's 'Thunderbolts' Teaser Links to A24 Films 'Hereditary' and 'Beef'

Marvel Studios is taking an unconventional approach to promoting its upcoming film, "Thunderbolts*," by highlighting the indie film backgrounds of its cast and crew. A new teaser trailer emphasizes the connections between the Marvel movie and the acclaimed independent film studio A24, known for its distinctive and often artistically daring productions.

The teaser departs from Marvel's usual bombastic style, opting instead for a slick techno soundtrack and title cards that proudly display the A24 credits of the film's stars and creative team. Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus are showcased alongside their work in A24 films such as "Midsommar," "A Different Man," and "You Hurt My Feelings," respectively. The Marvel Studios logo itself even receives an A24-esque makeover, further emphasizing the connection.

Beyond the actors, the trailer also spotlights the A24 pedigree of several behind-the-scenes talents. These include Harry Yoon, the editor of "Minari"; Jake Schreier, the director of "Thunderbolts*," and his "Beef" co-writers Lee Sung Jin and Joanna Calo; Andrew Droz Palermo, the cinematographer of "The Green Knight"; Grace Yun, the production designer of "Hereditary"; and Son Lux, the composers of "Everything Everywhere All At Once."

Director Jake Schreier has indicated that Marvel encouraged him to make "Thunderbolts*" a departure from the norm. He explained that the goal was to create a Marvel movie with the sensibilities of the people who make A24-style films. Florence Pugh has also described the film as having a "badass indie, A24-feeling assassin movie with Marvel superheroes" vibe.

A24, seemingly caught off guard by Marvel's marketing strategy, responded to the teaser with a humorous meme referencing its HBO drama "Euphoria," playfully questioning whether the promotion was about them. "Thunderbolts*," scheduled for release on May 2, features a team of reformed Marvel villains, including Pugh, David Harbour, Olga Kurylenko, Hannah John-Kamen, and Wyatt Russell, undertaking covert missions for the U.S. government. Lewis Pullman joins the cast as a new character named Bob. The film is based on the comic series by Kurt Busiek and is produced by Kevin Feige, with Louis D’Esposito, Brian Chapek, Jason Tamez, and Scarlett Johansson serving as executive producers.
