Martinez Named Head Coach of Egyptian Men's National Basketball Team

The Egyptian Basketball Federation confirmed on Monday that Julian Martinez has been appointed as the new head coach of Egypt's women's national basketball team. Martinez, a Spanish national, is taking over from Amr Elmaraghy, who previously led the team.

Under Amr Elmaraghy's leadership, Egypt secured a second-place finish in the 2025 Women's AfroBasket Qualifiers Zone 5 tournament. This tournament was held in February at the Hassan Moustafa Sports Hall in Cairo. During the qualifiers, Egypt maintained an undefeated streak through four games leading up to the final match. However, they were defeated in the final by Uganda, with a score of 74-63.

Following the qualifiers, Egypt was one of two teams, alongside South Sudan, to receive a wildcard invitation from FIBA Africa for this year's Women's AfroBasket. The main tournament is scheduled to take place in Abidjan from July 26 to August.

Julian Martinez is not new to the African basketball scene. He has prior experience coaching Mozambique at the 2019 Women's AfroBasket held in Dakar. Furthermore, Martinez was at the helm of the women's team for Angolan champions InterClube. More recently, he coached Rwanda's REG team in the 2024 Women's Basketball League Africa (WBLA) tournament, bringing a significant track record to his new role with the Egyptian national team.
