Lagos resident Mr. Ogunbadejo Olawale, of No. 25 Ajiboye Street, Alapere, Ketu, has been remanded at Kirikiri Prison after being caught in a viral video dumping refuse on the Alapere link bridge in Ketu.
A joint enforcement team comprising the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) and the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC/KAI) made the arrest.
He was arraigned before the Environmental and Special Offences Court in Oshodi, which ordered his remand pending the next court hearing, scheduled for June 26, 2025.
Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, expressed serious concern over the recurring disregard for environmental laws in Lagos, noting that the government is intensifying surveillance and enforcement operations across the state.
“The offender was caught red-handed disposing refuse indiscriminately in public, thereby undermining the government’s efforts toward achieving a cleaner and more hygienic Lagos,” Wahab said.
“His arrest is a clear demonstration of the state’s resolve to enforce environmental laws and restore sanity to public spaces. The suspect will immediately be prosecuted in accordance with the relevant law of the State.”
He called for greater collaboration between communities and government agencies to report environmental violations, assuring swift responses to such alerts.
LAWMA’s Managing Director/CEO, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, described the act as sabotage of the state’s environmental agenda and praised the Alapere community's vigilance in exposing the offender.
“This arrest is a strong message to those who persist in sabotaging the state’s environmental agenda. Lagos is not a dumping ground,” he said, urging residents to use approved waste disposal services and avoid outlawed cart pushers.
Also speaking, LAGESC/KAI Corps Marshal, Major Olaniyi Olatunbosun Cole (Rtd), condemned the suspect’s actions and warned that intensified patrols and intelligence gathering would continue to identify and prosecute violators.
“No one who violates environmental laws will go unpunished,” Cole stated.
“Indiscriminate waste disposal threatens public health, damages infrastructure, and erodes the government’s commitment to a cleaner Lagos," he added.
