Mom shoots her 38-year-old son for playing video games too loud

Published 5 hours ago2 minute read

In a bizarre case that wouldn't be out of place in a Grand Theft Auto mission, a 72-year-old Mesa, Arizona woman shot her son after an argument about him playing video games too loudly. Fox 10 Phoenix said Hazel Benson told police she and her son argued about how loud his games were.

She called police about the loud video games, and as you can imagine the police had little interest in getting involved in this domestic difference. They asked the pair to settle the matter between themselves and left to take care of, you know, some actual crimes. I'm sure these officers didn't imagine they'd be back later.

The son went for a walk, and when he tried to reenter the home, Benson shot him and threw the gun in a nearby canal. He went to the hospital and is expected to recover. Benson was charged with aggravated assault, disorderly conduct, and discharge of a firearm within city limits.

Neighbors were shocked to hear the gunshots and see the police cars. They were even more shocked when they heard the reason behind the multiple police visits to their normally quiet neighborhood. One of the neighbors told Fox 10 there had never been any incidents at the residence.

Before I arrived at App Trigger, I was a police reporter for my local newspaper. I've seen some pretty crazy stories, but this one is a first for me. I can only tell you that when you start the night listening to police radio, you never know how it's going to end.

But since the cops and crimes I write about now are usually of the digital kind, is it wrong that I want to know what game he was playing?
