Liverpool forward Diogo Jota, 28, has died in a car crash near Zamora, in northwestern Spain, according to multiple local reports. The Portuguese international was reportedly traveling with his brother Andre, who also died in the accident when their car veered off the road and burst into flames.

The news has shocked the football world, coming just weeks after Jota’s recent marriage.

Jota joined Liverpool in September 2020 from Wolverhampton Wanderers for a transfer fee exceeding £40 million (€44.7 million). Since then, he made 182 appearances for the Reds, scoring 65 goals and providing 26 assists, becoming a key attacking player for the club. Known for his clinical finishing, pace, and dribbling, Jota played an important role in Liverpool’s successes over recent seasons despite recurring injury setbacks.

Throughout his Liverpool career, Jota battled various injuries, including hamstring, calf, and knee problems that often limited his game time. Nevertheless, he contributed crucial goals and was part of Liverpool’s trophy-winning squads, including the Premier League title and domestic cups.

Internationally, he was a regular for Portugal, helping them win the UEFA Nations League twice, in 2019 and 2025.

The accident occurred on the A52 highway near Zamora, with reports indicating the vehicle left the road and caught fire, killing both Jota and his brother instantly.
