Little relief from heat in last two weeks of May, says weatherman

SINGAPORE – Those looking for respite from the heat will find little relief in the last two weeks of May, as the daily maximum temperatures will most likely remain at 34 deg C on most days, even with the rain.

The Meteorological Service Singapore said on May 16 that inter-monsoon conditions, which bring light and variable winds as well as heightened lightning activity, are expected to continue in the second fortnight of the month.

During the first week of the fortnight, Sumatra squalls may bring widespread thundery showers and gusty winds on some mornings.

In the second week of the fortnight, there may be localised short-duration thundery showers over parts of Singapore on a few afternoons.

The temperature will remain largely unchanged from the first two weeks of May, with the mercury possibly reaching 35 deg C on some days.

The weatherman added that the total rainfall for the second fortnight is expected to be near average over most parts of the island.

In the first two weeks of May, Singapore experienced moderate to heavy showers on most days as inter-monsoon conditions prevailed.

On May 5, heavy thundery rainfall occurred over many parts of the island, owing to the regional convergence of winds. Bukit Timah saw a daily total rainfall of 99.4mm – the highest volume recorded in the first fortnight of the month.

Most parts of Singapore recorded above-average rainfall during that period, with the rainfall around Bukit Timah being about 170 per cent above average.

Tengah experienced rainfall that was about 60 per cent below average.

On most days, the daily maximum temperature exceeded 34 dec C, with the highest – 35.4 deg C – logged in Paya Lebar on May 3.
