Lagos is set to witness a captivating three-day theatre spectacle as final preparations conclude for ‘The Noble Warrior (Eni Ogun),’ a Black musical masterpiece scheduled to run from July 11 to 13 at the historic Glover Memorial Hall.

With performances slated for 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. daily, the production is part of celebrations marking the 91st birthday of Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, on Sunday, July 13.

Anticipation is high as the critically acclaimed musical returns for a fresh run, promising more than just a tribute to the global literary icon.

The Noble Warrior offers a powerful exploration of identity, resilience, and the enduring spirit of Africa, weaving together music, movement, and storytelling in a bold celebration of the human experience.

Directed by acclaimed theatre visionary Segun Adefila, “The Noble Warrior” promises a blend of storytelling, emotion, and theatrical innovation.

Adefila, who is the artistic director, describes the musical drama as deeply personal.

“Noble Warrior is my story, your story, our story,” he says. “There’s no pretence of perfection here. Everyone has flaws, and every action has a reason.”

The drama weaves in powerful metaphors, including one involving the rape of a well-brought-up young woman, a symbolic commentary on the historical violation of Africa. Yet, Adefila insists, “Africa is still a beacon of hope.”

Playing the role of Oluwole (Soyinka), Oluwatosin Yormekpeh acknowledges the immense responsibility.

“It’s a challenge, but also a privilege. You’re at the centre of it all, and you must give everything. This isn’t just another show, it’s intentional, intense and completely unique,” Yormekpeh said.

Cast member Sholanke Oluwatosin, who plays Olasope, adds that this version of the musical is educational and inspiring.

“It’s more than entertainment. There’s so much to learn, especially as we honour a noble man like Wole Soyinka,” Oluwatosin said.

Friday Francis Olohuntimileyin sees the production as a noble undertaking, saying, “We’re celebrating a man who stood for the nation and society. Everything he endured — even prison — we’re bringing that story to life.”

Actor Segun Moses, who portrays Apena, connects Soyinka’s activism with his own character.

“He’s worth celebrating. His name carries weight. This is another opportunity to come and see the show, especially if you missed it last year,” he said.

Stage manager and cast member Michael Okorie calls the musical’s style groundbreaking.

“It’s something new. This hasn’t been done anywhere else in the world, and we’re doing it first,” Okorie said.

Written by Cash Onadele and directed by Segun Adefila, The Noble Warrior (Eni Ogun) is a Black musical masterpiece theatre scheduled to run from July 11 to 13, 2025, at Glover Memorial Hall in Lagos. With a stellar cast and a deeply resonant message, this production promises a transformative experience for all who attend.
