Lagos Mega Slum Warning: Showunmi Urges Sanwo-Olu to Act

A leader of the Peoples Democratic Party in Ogun State, Otunba Segun Showunmi, on Wednesday hailed the developmental strides recorded in the last six years’ administration of Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

Showunmi, however, urged Sanwo-Olu to double up efforts to address the growing environmental challenges confronting the state, warning that the governor can not allow Lagos State to become a mega slum under his watch.

The PDP chieftain and promoter of The Alternatives Movement disclosed this in a statement issued on Wednesday to rejoice with Sanwo-Olu on the auspicious occasion of his 60th birthday.

Showunmi said that the governor has no doubt done his best in the last six years to pitch tent with good governance and served the people of the state, but he should use the remaining two years to ensure compliance with Master plan for the state and raise the bar against those working day and night to make the nation’s commercial nerve centre a “mega slum”.

He said that Sanwo-Olu, like never before, must demonstrate courage and build on the good works his predecessors in office, such as President Bola Tinubu, ex- Governor Akinwumi Ambode, Mr Babatunde Raji Fashola, SAN and others, had done to address environmental challenges confronting the state.

Showunmi explained, “The achievements are undeniable as you begin the last lap towards the completion of your 2nd term in office, but I encourage you to take off the gloves and fix the environmental issues.

“Let the work of Tokunbo Wahab be front and centre and top priority. We know our history of Lagos, and we thank God for the development so far.

“The time is now to force compliance with the master plan in such a way that whoever comes after you will not need to apologise for trying to build a modern city.

“What must be pulled down should be pulled down. What must be provided for the greater good of the people must be provided for the good of the people.

“Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu started the vision, Fashola deepened the framework, Ambode drove it deeper into places that the poor live in; it is now on your shoulders to sanitise the built-up areas.

“Lagos must not be a mega slum. It is not a no man’s land! It is a land for all persons who wish to live and strive in the biggest economic city-state in Africa. Sparkle like a Diamond. Many happy returns.”
