From Adventureland to Welcome to the Rileys, these are Kristen Stewart’s best indie movies.
Personal Shopper was written and directed by Olivier Assayas, the French filmmaker responsible for directing Stewart in the film Clouds of Sils Maria. It stars Stewart along with Lars Eidinger, Anders Danielsen Lie, Pascal Rambert, and Nora Waldstätten, among others. The haunting cinematography, an essential part of the film, is by Yorick Le Saux, who has also worked on films like Only Lovers Left Alive, High Life, 2019's Little Women, and Blitz.
Despite receiving a theatrical release, Personal Shopper was not a very popular film. It only grossed $3.8 million at the box office, and to this day, it remains an obscure film starring Stewart, who hadn't done many horror films up to that point. 2007's The Messengers was one of the first, and Twilight came after, although the vampire franchise leans more into YA fantasy than horror. After Personal Shopper, Stewart has been stepping closer to more serious horror films. Her roles in Underwater, Crimes of the Future, and Love Lies Bleeding are definite proof of this.

Mild spoilers for Personal Shopper ahead.
Playing Maureen in Personal Shopper gave Stewart the opportunity to explore her range. Although the often underrated actor has expanded towards other genres in the recent decade, films like Personal Shopper allowed her to keep steering away from the typecast shaped by the Twilight franchise. Many would argue against Personal Shopper being labeled a horror film because it doesn't feature the usual tropes of scary movies. Nevertheless, at its core, it is a ghost story.
Additionally, Stewart's portrayal of an emotionally disturbed woman tilts the film towards the psychological thriller genre–especially in the second act, when it seems that she's afraid of something that's not supernatural. But then, the final act resurfaces the possibility that Personal Shopper is indeed a supernatural horror movie. The last scene of the film is a beautiful confirmation of Assayas' vision of delivering a different kind of horror movie starring one of today's most underrated performers at her absolute best.
