Fatal Two-Storey Building Collapse in Lagos Claims Three Lives, Nine Rescued

A two-storey building under construction collapsed on Tuesday at Otta Ona Junction, near the Mobil Filling Station bus stop in Ikorodu, Lagos State, resulting in the deaths of three individuals and injuries to several others. The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) confirmed the fatalities in a statement on Wednesday.

According to LASEMA Permanent Secretary, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, distress alerts were received at 2:02 PM on Tuesday, prompting the activation of the State’s Emergency Response Plans. LASEMA teams from Agbowa, Alausa, and Cappa bases, including the Lion, Tiger, and Eagle Response Teams, arrived at the scene at 2:40 PM. They discovered that three people were trapped under the debris of the collapsed structure.

The deceased victims, identified as two adult males and a teenage girl, were reportedly construction workers on the ground floor when the building came down with a thunderous sound. One body was recovered shortly after the incident, while the remaining two were retrieved during an extended search and rescue operation that continued into the early hours of Wednesday. The bodies of the deceased have been handed over to officers at the Igbogbo Police Station/Division.

In addition to the fatalities, nine adult males were successfully rescued from the rubble. They received pre-hospital care from LASEMA's unit at the scene. To facilitate the rescue operation, heavy-duty equipment, including an excavator, was deployed to clear debris, and floodlights were used for nighttime operations.

The cause of the building collapse is yet to be ascertained, and investigations are ongoing to determine the reasons for the structural failure. LASEMA has cordoned off the operational area and stated that the affected structure is being deconstructed to ground level to ensure the safety of emergency personnel and the public.

Several other agencies collaborated in the emergency response, including the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, the Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, the Nigerian Police Force, the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC). Search and rescue efforts were reported to be still ongoing as of Wednesday.
