Kenyan National Prayer Breakfast 2025: Key Addresses and Themes

During the Annual National Prayer Breakfast held at Safari Park on May 28, 2025, prominent political figures gathered, including Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, President William Ruto, Senate Speaker Amason Kingi, and National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang'ula. The event became a platform for Speaker Wetang'ula to offer words of encouragement to President Ruto, who has been facing public criticism.
Speaker Wetang'ula urged President Ruto to find strength and guidance in the Bible, specifically directing him to the Book of Isaiah, chapter 54, verse 17. This biblical passage reads, "No weapon formed against you will prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn." Wetang'ula emphasized that while challenges and opposition ("weapons") would inevitably arise, they would ultimately not succeed. He highlighted that God's assurance was not the absence of opposition, but its eventual failure.
Drawing further from the teachings of Isaiah, Wetang'ula remarked that "great leaders never lose sight of the big picture." He encouraged President Ruto to maintain his focus on the broader vision for Kenya and affirmed continued support from the legislature for the government's agenda, pledging to help the Executive deliver on its commitments. "We encourage you, Your Excellency, to remain such a great leader, with a focus on the big picture for our country," Wetang'ula stated.
The Speaker's remarks followed recent statements from President Ruto, who has dismissed the growing criticism and speculation surrounding his political future. Speaking on a Sunday during a church service at AIC Kibra, President Ruto asserted his firm commitment to fulfilling the promises made to the Kenyan people, stating he would not be distracted by what he termed "political noise" from opponents forecasting his defeat in the 2027 General Election. He drew a parallel with the biblical figure Nehemiah, who faced distractors while rebuilding the wall, urging a focus on national transformation. "Let us not waste time on people with no plan, no agenda, and no vision. Let's focus on the transformation of Kenya. Our agriculture is being transformed, our economy is undergoing reforms. Let us stay the course,” Ruto declared.
Criticism against President Ruto's administration, notably voiced by figures such as former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, has centered on allegations that the government is neglecting its duties. Critics point to pressing issues like high youth unemployment and the escalating cost of essential commodities as evidence of these unmet responsibilities.
