Karsten Warholm Sets New World Best in 300-Meter Hurdles

Norwegian athlete Karsten Warholm achieved a remarkable feat at the Oslo Diamond League in Bislett Stadion, shattering his own 300-meter hurdles world best time. Competing in front of an enthusiastic home crowd on Wednesday, Warholm clocked an astonishing 32.67 seconds, significantly improving upon his previous mark of 33.05 seconds, which he had set in April.

The Olympic gold medalist and three-time world champion demonstrated his exceptional prowess by surging past American rival Rai Benjamin on the final stretch. After crossing the finish line, Warholm celebrated his victory with a powerful roar and by ripping off his top, a gesture of pure exhilaration. Reflecting on the race, Warholm admitted, “The race went well, although I was rather worried with how much Rai was closing on me.” He added, “But I knew I could push on over the last hurdle to home. I usually fade at the end of the 400, so the 300 suits me to some degree, but I will be back strong in the 400 on Sunday.”

This event marked the first time Warholm had competed over 300m hurdles against reigning Olympic 400m hurdles champion Rai Benjamin and Brazil’s former world champion Alison dos Santos. While the 300m hurdles is a lesser-seen event compared to the traditional 400m hurdles, it provided an exciting showcase of talent. Benjamin finished second with a time of 33.22 seconds, fending off a late challenge from dos Santos, who secured third place in 33.38 seconds. All three formidable athletes are scheduled to compete again on Sunday in the 400m hurdles, promising another thrilling showdown.

Earlier this year, World Athletics announced its intention to make the 300m hurdles an official event in its competitions. However, the specific conditions required for setting an inaugural official world record—as distinct from a world best time like Warholm’s—will be determined once the event gains sufficient popularity.

In other notable results from the Oslo Diamond League, Sweden’s Armand Duplantis continued his dominant form in pole vault. He clinched the title with a meeting record of 6.15 meters. This victory extends Duplantis’s remarkable unbeaten streak since July 2023, following his achievement earlier this year of breaking the world record for the eleventh time.
