With Stree 2 becoming one of the biggest blockbusters in Indian Cinema and one of the highest grossers in 2024, producer-director Karan Johar opened up about the evolving landscape of women-centric films, while touching upon subjects like audience pull that impacts the remuneration of actors.

In the past, many of them have discussed the existing pay disparity between male and female actors, to which many have insisted that their remuneration is often decided by the audience pull of the male and female actors in theatres. During a podcast with YouTube and social media personality Lilly Singh, filmmaker Karan Johar addressed this subject and opened up about the extraordinary success of Stree 2 – a woman-centric horror comedy that went on to become the biggest Hindi blockbuster of 2024. “Men talk about pay parity and that they should be paid more because they bring more money, but we are talking about the time when women’s movies are opening much higher than some big male movie stars who are opening to dismal box office numbers,” Karan shared in the podcast.

Further, comparing it with the earlier success of the Sanjay Leela Bhansali film Gangubai Kathiawadi, headlined by Alia Bhatt, Karan Johar stated, “When Alia did Gangubai Kathiawadi, that, to me, was a big victory in cinema. That character was completely driven by her performance and it opened to larger numbers than many leading men who are movie stars. This is a big sign that a woman can lead a film.”

Apart from this, the producer and head honcho of Dharma Productions also broached the subject of gender politics wherein he added, “If we can get our politics right… I am not saying always entertain. Cinema is meant for large scale, entertainment, visual spectacle, joy, everything that you are meant to feel but you can do it all without the wrong politics. You can entertain a large audience across the nation by just not propagating, positioning and platforming incorrect gender politics or incorrect social norms, incorrect ways of being. Just basics have to be followed. Unfortunately, there is no censorship in the world that can help you, it has to be self-censorship. A film that doesn’t have right communication may still be a blockbuster but is that eventually a good thing? I am not sure.”
