Kano: Bayero cancels Sallah Durbar over security concerns
Aminu Ado Bayero, the 15th emir of Kano, has called off this year’s Sallah Durbar, citing security concerns and the need to uphold peace in the state.
In a public statement, Bayero regretted the decision but emphasised that protecting lives and property takes precedence. He explained that given the current situation, suspending the celebrations was the most responsible course of action to avoid potential unrest.
“Considering the trust placed in us by the people and our duty to protect them, we have decided to suspend all planned activities for this year’s Sallah Durbar in light of prevailing circumstances,” Bayero said.

He revealed that the decision followed extensive consultations with religious leaders, security agencies, and other stakeholders. While acknowledging the deep cultural and historical importance of the Durbar, he maintained that public safety must come first.
“The Sallah Durbar is a revered tradition, but it is not worth the risk if it threatens peace, causes harm, or leads to property damage,” he added.
The backdrop to these security concerns includes a lingering tussle within the emirate, following Bayero’s dethronement by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, who reinstated the 14th Emir of Kano, Alhaji Muhammadu Sanusi. This development has polarised the emirate and heightened tensions, leading to apprehensions about potential unrest during large public gatherings such as the Sallah Durbar.
In light of these circumstances, the emir deemed it prudent to halt the Durbar activities to prevent any possible escalation of conflict and to prioritise the safety of Kano’s residents.

Bayero expressed hope that the decision would help foster long-term peace in Kano and the country at large. He also apologised to Kano residents for the cancellation, urging them to support the move in the interest of the state’s stability.
The announcement comes after Bayero formally notified the police of his intent to hold the Durbar. However, concerns arose about potential violence, especially as Muhammadu Sanusi, also recognised as the 15th Emir of Kano, was reportedly making similar plans. The situation heightened tensions, leading Bayero to ultimately cancel the event.
As Kano faces this sensitive period, attention remains on the state’s leadership to ensure calm and unity in the days ahead.
