Two men have died after falling into a latrine pit in Bazabe Quarters of Albasu Local Government Area of Kano State, the State Fire Service has confirmed.
According to a statement released on Sunday by the Service’s Public Relations Officer, ACFO Saminu Yusif Abdullahi, the tragic incident occurred on Saturday, June 21, 2025.
The Takai Fire Station received an emergency call around 11:16 am from one Inspector Auwalu, alerting them to the incident. Upon arrival at the scene, rescue personnel found that the first victim, identified as 40-year-old Usman Muhammad, had entered the pit in an attempt to retrieve his mobile phone, popularly known as Indon Kauye, which had accidentally fallen in.
However, he became trapped and was unable to get out.
A second man, Ibrahim Inuwa, also aged around 40, reportedly entered the pit in an attempt to rescue Muhammad. He succeeded in tying a rope around the first victim in preparation for extraction but eventually lost consciousness as well.
“Both men were retrieved from the pit unconscious and were later confirmed dead,” the statement read.
The bodies of the deceased were handed over to the Divisional Police Officer of Albasu LGA, SP Kabiru Magawata, for further investigation and necessary procedures.
The Fire Service has cautioned the public against entering hazardous environments and urged residents to always seek professional assistance in emergency situations.
