Juma Jux: Projecting East African Music Globally
singer, fashion entrepreneur, and record label executive, Juma Mkambala, popularly known as Juma Jux, has expressed his deep commitment to taking East African music and culture to the global stage.
Jux, who recently tied the knot with Priscilla Ojo, daughter of Nigerian actress and influencer, Iyabo Ojo, appears to be settling seamlessly into the Nigerian entertainment scene—both through music and social presence. Following their lavish wedding ceremonies held in both Tanzania and Nigeria, the “Ex Wa Nani” crooner has continued to enjoy growing popularity in West Africa.
Speaking in an interview with Sunday Scoop, the multilingual Computer Science graduate highlighted his mission to spotlight the sound and soul of East Africa on the world stage.
He said, “My role as an East African artiste is to ensure African music continues to grow globally. We are in a good place right now. I am making sure that I contribute to the sound, especially by encouraging East Africans to infuse Swahili and Bongo Flava into the wider afrobeats movement,” he said.
The singer, who gave a standout performance while closing the 17th Headies Awards in Lagos last April, recently joined fellow Tanzanian superstar, Diamond Platnumz on a tour of the UK; performing in London, Manchester, and Glasgow to rave reviews.
Defining what legacy means to him, Juma said, “When I think about legacy, I think about consistency and doing things that people won’t forget. African Boy (his fashion brand) is about good quality and pride in local creation; something that can stand alongside top global brands.”
While the streaming numbers and sold-out shows continue to stack up, the “Enjoy” hitmaker said his true measure of success lies in connection and emotional impact.
“For me, success is when I see people feeling good because of my music. Sometimes, it’s like therapy for them. That joy I see on people’s faces when I perform—that’s everything,” he said.
Also passionate about storytelling through visuals and style, Jux makes a conscious effort to showcase Tanzanian beauty and culture in his content; from scenic shoots in Zanzibar to incorporating Masai-inspired elements in his fashion designs.
