Janus Films Acquires Bi Gan's Cannes Prize Winner 'Resurrection' For North America - mxdwn Movies
Actors Jackson Yee, Shu Qi, Mark Chao, and Li Gengxi make up the cast of Resurrection, which tells in six chapters a science fiction and magical realism melded narrative about a world whose inhabitants have lost the ability to dream. A centerpiece of the film is a 30-minute long-take shot with the DJI Ronin 4D camera. Previous films by Bi have been noted and acclaimed for their rigorous and lengthy single take shots, including his debut Kaili Blues, featuring a 41 minute one-take, and his sophomore feature, Long Day’s Journey Into Night, which received praise for staging its final 59 minutes within the span of a single take filmed in 3D.
Actress Shu Qi has previously appeared in films that competed in the Cannes Film Festival’s official competition prior to Resurrection. Most notable was her work with Taiwanese director Hou Hsiao-hsien with 2001’s Millennium Mambo, 2005’s Three Times, and most recently, 2015’s The Assassin. Hou, much like Bi Gan now, had been identified with a style dominated by absorbing long-take sequences and luscious visual textures and lighting. Shu Qi’s appearance in films by both directors lends an intertextual connection between the two Chinese-language directors. Meanwhile, Janus Films declared that they hope that Resurrection strikes a chord with “fans of daring, visionary filmmakers like David Lynch, Andrei Tarkovsky, Leos Carax and Wong Kar-wai,” drawing a line to renowned filmmakers noted for their visual expertise and fluidity.
