Jacksonville braces for scattered storms and steamy weekend: News4JAX Meteorologist Katie Garner break down the forecast

Published 1 day ago2 minute read

– Be ready for summer storms, Jacksonville.

The biggest weather topic for the city and surrounding communities is the continued chance for afternoon and evening thunderstorms, especially if you’re inland.

By the afternoon, though, we do have a risk for general thunderstorms. The good news is that nothing severe is expected, but strong storms inland could be a possibility.

Expect the highest chances from about 1 p.m. to 9 p.m., depending on your exact location. Areas including Gainesville, Macclenny, Waycross, Orange Park, and Jacksonville could see some heavy downpours, with storm activity moving inland rather than along the coast.

If you have outdoor plans, we recommend tracking radar with the News4JAX Exact Track 4D app.

While coastlines are expected to stay mostly clear, the forecast shows pop-up storms that may require last-minute adjustments to your schedule.

The heat is ramping up -- again. The latest forecast calls for temperatures climbing from the low 70s into the low to mid 90s this afternoon, with the trend likely to stick around for the next week.

Hourly temperatures will climb into the 90s by about 2 p.m.

Morning activities are best for you (and your pets), as heat builds quickly through the day. The Weather Authority recommends early walks if you’re bringing the dog along, since asphalt can become hot enough to burn paws by midday.

Tonight is forecast to be mostly cloudy with lows near 74 degrees, so things won’t cool down much overnight.

Expect this pattern to repeat across the 7-day outlook.

Jacksonville’s summer weather pattern is here for the long ride. Each afternoon brings a chance of showers and storms—about 60% into Saturday and Sunday, with highs steady in the low to mid 90s.

There’s no reason to cancel your weekend plans, but keep an eye on the radar because there may be times when you need to go inside as pop-up showers occur.

For those heading to the beach, keep in mind there’s a moderate rip current risk today across Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia. Take extra caution if venturing into the water.
