Iowa State Basketball Lands Eastern Washington G Mason Williams

Iowa State has been aggressive in the transfer portal after their second-round exit in the NCAA Tournament and has now collected their second commitment of the cycle.

Eastern Washington transfer guard Mason Williams committed to the Cyclones on Friday, further bolstering its roster just a day after adding a pledge from Purdue Fort Wayne’s Eric Mulder.

Williams, a 6-foot-5 combo guard from Cheney, Washington, averaged just under 14 points, shooting 34.5% from three for the Eagles last season.

Coming off of his sophomore season, Williams will have two years of eligibility remaining when he arrives in Ames, and will immediately factor into the lineup with both Keshon Gilbert and Curtis Jones headed out. Gilbert, who missed the NCAA Tournament with injury, was ISU’s second-leading scorer and assist leader, while Jones wasthe team’s top scorer and three-point shooter.

Despite this being a big get for the Cyclones, Williams is likely not the final addition that we’ll see from ISU in the backcourt. He’s proven to be a capable scorer, which they’ll need, but they’ll probably make another splash or two by time all is said and done.

T.J. Otzelberger should have both Tamin Lipsey and Milan Momcilovic back next season, and they’ll also add some big-time talent with their incoming freshman class. Now, with Williams aboard, the Cyclones can look to make a couple more additions in the backcourt and then fill out their front court depth as well.
