Internal Crisis Rocks Labour Party; Faction Blames Peter Obi and Alex Otti

The leadership crisis within the Nigerian Labour Party (LP) has intensified, with conflicting accusations from different factions. The faction led by National Chairman Julius Abure has directly blamed its 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, for instigating and sustaining the internal turmoil. According to a statement by the Abure faction's National Secretary, Umar Farouk Ibrahim, the party was peaceful until Obi and Otti allegedly established a caretaker committee while Abure's leadership tenure was still active. This camp absolved the Federal Government and the All Progressives Congress (APC) of any responsibility for the crisis.

Conversely, Peter Obi has publicly accused the APC-led Federal Government of using infiltrators to destabilize the Labour Party. In an interview on national television, Obi asserted, “The problem we have in LP is a problem instigated and sustained by the government of today.” The Abure faction has challenged Obi to provide tangible evidence for these claims, accusing him of failing to provide leadership and urging him to accept responsibility for his mistakes. They further alleged that Obi and Otti are waging a sustained campaign of media blackmail against the party's leadership and noted that Governor Otti is currently serving a suspension for anti-party activities.

Umar Farouk Ibrahim reiterated that the problem was not created by the ruling party but by Obi and Otti. “We dare Obi to produce any tangible or intangible evidence which suggests remotely or otherwise that the Abure leadership of the LP is in bed with the APC-led government,” Ibrahim stated, emphasizing that the Abure faction made sacrifices to accommodate Obi for the 2023 election. He also pointed out that Obi's recent recognition of Abure as national chairman during an interview was a subtle acknowledgement of legitimate leadership, suggesting the issue of chairmanship should be considered settled.

Amidst this internal conflict, Peter Obi has continued his push for political reform ahead of the 2027 general election. Speaking at a book presentation, Obi urged Nigerians to elect compassionate and credible leaders, likening Nigeria's current situation to a sinking Titanic and describing the next election cycle as a critical opportunity to save the nation. He stressed the importance of electing suitable individuals to the National Assembly and warned against politicians motivated by financial gain. Obi declared that the Labour Party and its supporters would mobilize to ensure every vote counts in 2027. He also lamented the state of Nigeria, comparing it to a nation at war due to widespread killings and displacement, which he attributed to a lack of government care for its citizens.
