Imphal Valley flooded as heavy rain raises water level of rivers

Imphal: As continuous rainfall lashes over the past few days, a sharp rise in the water levels of rivers in Manipur, including the Nambul and Imphal rivers, has again caused widespread flooding and severe hardship in several localities in Imphal Valley.

Poor drainage systems have further aggravated the situation, resulting in inundation of residential areas across the valley.Reports said several homes in Konchak Makha Leikai in Mayang Imphal assembly constituency have been submerged by overflowing rainwater. According to a resident of the area, flooding has become a recurring crisis, with their locality getting submerged two to three times every year during the rainy season.

There are reports that Khulkhul areas near Sekmai have been flooded after Nambul river rises since Tuesday. According to department sources, Nambul bridge came to the mark 773.900, Thoubal bridge 774.825 and Ithai bridge at 768.660 till 6pm on Tuesday.Despite the regular occurrence of such floods, residents said no significant steps have been taken by local representatives or govt agencies to address the issue. Many families have been affected because of the flood and usable water sources have become contaminated. The populace reportedly have been facing health problems because of poor sanitation and lack of access to clean water.
