Impact of Affordable Housing and Markets

The Nanyuki Affordable Housing project is expected to meet the growing housing demand in the region by March 22, 2025, according to Boniface Gikandi of the Standard. This project is part of a broader government initiative to provide affordable housing across the Mt Kenya region, with several projects nearing completion. Despite some criticism, these housing programs have seen significant interest, with many units already overbooked through the Boma Yangu portal.
President William Ruto is scheduled to inspect these projects during his tour of the Mt Kenya region. The housing developments in Nanyuki, Gichugu, and Makeji have garnered positive attention, attracting numerous bookings. Specifically, the Nanyuki housing program, featuring 200 units, is reportedly 95% complete and overbooked, prompting plans for a second phase.
Laikipia Governor Joshua Irungu, after inspecting the affordable housing units, emphasized the project's potential to provide quality, accessible housing for residents. He also highlighted the ongoing construction of the Nanyuki market, which is expected to boost trade and support small businesses. Peter Muruthii, a real estate player in Nanyuki, noted the high demand for shelter in the rapidly growing town, stating that the 200 new units would offer relief to public servants and others who have been forced to seek housing far from their workplaces.
Muruthii also pointed out that the government's investment in affordable housing would stimulate trade opportunities and attract more people to the countryside, despite some initial criticism. He acknowledged the challenges faced by private inventors in building decent houses in Nanyuki.
Albert Gakuru, Central Director in charge of the Affordable Housing Programme, confirmed that the projects in Nanyuki, Gichugu, and Makeji are nearing completion and that a majority of the houses have already been booked. He also praised the cooperation between contractors and local communities and noted that the projects have provided employment opportunities for the youth, reducing criminal activities.
In Murang’a, there are 14 Economic Stimulus Programme (ESP) markets and two modern markets, Kangari (95% complete) and the ongoing Muthithi market. In Gichugu constituency, the contractor is putting the final touches on the project, which has enhanced the status of the Kianyaga market. Kangema MP Peter Kihungi mentioned that they benefited from two ESP markets at Kanyenya ini and Karugia markets, amounting to Sh100 million. He also highlighted government-funded irrigation programs like Kairi and Kiwambogo, which will serve parts of Iyego and Kanyenya ini, while noting that Kangema is yet to launch its affordable housing program.
Housing Principal Secretary Charles Hinga stated that the housing and ESP market programs, once complete, will transform the country and improve the living standards of citizens through transformative programs.
