While at the scene, police said a second explosion took place, prompting the evacuation of nearby residences. A witness told CBS News Bay Area there were at least three explosions.

First responders treated several people at the scene. Two people were hospitalized, and police said they were listed in critical condition as of Thursday afternoon.

In a press statement, police said preliminary findings indicated suspected manufacturing of illegal fireworks or explosives at the home. The Alameda County bomb squad was called in "due to the potential hazards posed by remaining explosive materials inside the home," police said.

Firefighters were able to contain the fire to the garage, preventing further damage to the home and neighboring properties.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to contact the Hayward Police Department at 510-293-7000, referencing case number 2025-0037761.
