Poverty can push people to great lengths of sacrifice and compromise, as shown by Eric who was forced to sell his kidney at a local hospital in Eldoret.

Eric painfully opened up about the price he paid in his attempt to escape poverty and support his family.

The boda boda rider claimed he sold his kidney to get money to settle debts that had hindered his progress for years.

He sold his kidney for more than KSh 300,000—money he believed would turn his life and that of his family around.

"We stayed in a bedsitter. At the time, there were around eight people in that room. After three days, they took me to the hospital. They asked me several questions before proceeding with the kidney removal," the 30-year-old narrated.

He was given a fake ID and asked to sign a form stating that he was donating the kidney voluntarily and was not being paid or coerced.

Two days after the surgery, Eric was given the money and sent away, as their agreement had already been made.

"I bought a motorbike, paid off my mum's loan, and bought her a television. As of now, I have no money. I spent all of it," he revealed with a mix of pride and regret.

When asked what advice he would give to someone considering selling their kidney for money, Eric was firm in his response:

"The amount being paid is too small; it won’t help you at all. So, they should not do it. They shouldn't attempt it at all," he said, looking visibly saddened, as though regretting his decision.

Social media users shared their reactions in the comment section following Eric’s heartbreaking revelations:

MbrkHrevelationszz:

"They sold one of their most valuable organs only to buy a motorbike. What a tragic story. Africa."

VIVABELLAVIVAHERMANO:

"This is the most disgusting 🤮🤢 and despicable thing. Why do we do this as human beings?"

maghangaroy500:

"Very sad news. And we have a government that remains silent while this evil goes on. May Almighty God help us—only poor people are victims."

omolaraogundare8333:

"All these criminals do whatever they want in Africa and become rich at the expense of the lives of those who should be the leaders of tomorrow. The question is, will they even survive to see tomorrow if they’re forced to give up their vital organs due to poverty? African leaders are to blame for the multidimensional poverty that plagues our people."

IidSiciid-i3u:

"That’s why African countries are among the most corrupt. Why are young people thinking of selling their vital organs—especially kidneys—for so little in return?"

In a related case, a man from Eldoret named Amon Kipruto sold his kidney for KSh 600,000 in an attempt to escape poverty, but has since suffered from health complications.

He was approached by a group that made him an offer, which he initially rejected but later accepted due to financial desperation.

The surgery was performed at a hospital in Eldoret, after which he was paid for the organ. He now lives with regret, echoing Eric’s painful experience.
