has formally exited
Hera Pheri 3, bringing an abrupt end to his association with one of Bollywood's most iconic comedy franchises. According to multiple reports, Rawal has returned the Rs 11 lakh advance he received for the film, along with 15 percent annual interest and an additional goodwill amount. This move marks a decisive break from the project, which has been mired in delays and contractual disagreements. The core issue behind Rawal’s departure reportedly stems from a clause in his contract. While his total remuneration was locked at Rs 15 crore, the majority of this—Rs 14.89 crore—was scheduled to be paid only one month after the film’s release. With the film’s principal photography yet to begin and a tentative release pushed to late 2026 or 2027, Rawal would have faced a significant wait for his full payment. Citing these terms as a concern, the actor chose to exit the film.
A source quoted in Bollywood Hungama stated, “Paresh Rawal has returned the signing amount of Rs 11 lakh with 15% p.a. interest and also a little more money for stepping away from the series.”
Rawal’s departure has not gone unnoticed by the production team. Akshay Kumar’s production house, Cape of Good Films, which is backing the project, has reportedly filed a Rs 25 crore legal claim against the actor for backing out. According to reports, the legal notice accuses Rawal of breaching contract terms after having already shot some promotional content for the film, including a teaser and certain scenes filmed with
Akshay Kumar and Suniel Shetty.
In a statement to PTI, Akshay Kumar’s legal representatives expressed confidence in resolving the issue but warned of “severe legal consequences” for what they termed an unprofessional withdrawal.
The decision has also affected key figures associated with the franchise. Director Priyadarshan, in an interview with Mid-Day, shared his disappointment over Rawal’s departure. He confirmed that the contracts had been signed by all parties and added, “Ten days ago, Suniel, Akshay, and Paresh shot a scene and the IPL teaser. It was only after we unanimously agreed to do Hera Pheri 3 that Akshay bought the rights.”Priyadarshan further stated that he was “very hurt” by the manner in which Rawal exited and noted, “He didn’t inform any of us. He could have picked up the phone and told me before telling the media because we’ve been friends for years.”The Hera Pheri franchise, beginning with the 2000 original and followed by Phir Hera Pheri in 2006, has developed a cult following in Indian cinema. Rawal’s portrayal of Baburao Ganpatrao Apte is widely credited as a central element of the series' success. His departure has therefore left fans uncertain about the future of the third installment and whether it can recreate the same magic without him.
As of now, production on Hera Pheri 3 has been limited to a promotional shoot. With Rawal’s exit and ongoing legal proceedings, the film’s timeline and casting remain uncertain. The producers have yet to comment on any possible recasting or adjustments to the storyline.
