Heavy rain lashes NE, red alert for Assam dists
Guwahati: From Moreh in Manipur to Kokrajhar in Assam, heavy rain lashed the northeast in the last 24 hours. The IMD issued a red alert for several NE districts again for Friday, especially in the lower Assam region, as southwest monsoon has further advanced into remaining parts of the northeastern states."Heavy (7-11 cm in 24 hours) to very heavy rain (12-20 cm in 24 hours) is very likely to occur at a few places with isolated extremely heavy rainfall (21 cm and more in 24 hours) over the districts of Dhubri, South Salmara, Goalpara, Baksa, Bajali, Bongaigaon, West Karbi Anglong, Dima Hasao, Cachar, Hailakandi and Sribhumi districts, accompanied by squally wind at a speed of 40-50 kmph gusting up to 60 kmph," the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) of the IMD stated in its special weather bulletin for Friday.Though rain submerged various parts of Guwahati, the rainfall amount was only moderate, exposing the lack of a proper drainage system, officials said. According to the weather bulletin of the RMC, at Moreh in Manipur, the highest rainfall of 10 cm was recorded in the last 24 hours (8:30 am on Wednesday to 8:30 am on Thursday), followed by 8 cm of rainfall each in Kokrajhar in Assam and Chandel in Manipur.The Met office warned that heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places, with exceptionally heavy rainfall at isolated places, is very likely over Meghalaya on Friday.

Under its influence, the IMD said very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall is likely over the northeastern states until May 31. Isolated exceptionally heavy rainfall is also likely over Meghalaya on Friday, the Met office said.
