Harry Potter: Everything We Know About the Franchise's Upcoming Video Games

Published 3 weeks ago7 minute read

2025 is likely to be a bit of a transitional year for Harry Potter, as it says goodbye to the old and brings in the new. HBO is hard at work putting together the Harry Potter reboot series, which is set to define the portrayal of the franchise for the next decade. That means that all other departments must be working in sync to ensure that the pieces are in place for Harry Potter to go on a major new run.

The video game sector is a huge part of that plan, and Warner Bros. Discovery has massive ideas for what they wish to do with the property next. So, with recent confirmations, upcoming announcements, and wider company changes to dive into, this is what the path forward for Harry Potter may look like for video gamers. The future will be rocky, but if Hogwarts Legacy is anything to go by, there is surely some magic in store for those who wait.

Warner Bros. has always put Harry Potter at the top of its priority list, and its experimentation with the Fantastic Beasts saga, alongside its continued development of the Wizarding World parks, showcases that recent interest in expanding the brand. However, the biggest win that the company has had since the launch of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, was that of Hogwarts Legacy's debut. The title shot to the top of the charts, was universally acclaimed, and continues to support an avid and varied fan base, as it delivers on the kind of entertainment players want to see from the IP.

10 Harry Potter Plot Twists From the Books That the Movies Cut

The Harry Potter movies aren't short of shocking moments, but they don't compare to some of the major twists found in the books.

It's no surprise that rumblings have been heard across the industry for further support for the title. It was previously covered that Hogwarts Legacy would be receiving DLC of sorts, to cater to those loyal players who continue to interact with the title. It has since been reported that Avalanche Studios, the developers behind Hogwarts Legacy, are still set on crafting that additional content, and early indicators appear to suggest that this DLC could be released later in 2025.

With an urgency in its delivery, Warner Bros. Discovery are clearly keen to keep the title in the player's mind as they work on putting together a slew of other releases. It's a smart move, to continue to put relevancy on Hogwarts Legacy, and additional DLC is a notable way to do so.

However, that isn't the only way that Warner Bros. Discovery plans on maintaining the title in the public eye. It has also been reported that Hogwarts Legacy will be getting a refreshed take of sorts, perhaps , alongside that DLC content.

If this is the case, chances are that part of this project will be focused on bringing the game to next-gen consoles, with rumors swirling that a PlayStation 6 announcement could be imminent. Then, there's a sequel to consider, which reports have also confirmed the development of. Avalanche Studios is back in the driver's seat, driven by the success of their previous outing in the Wizarding World.

The details of that particular follow-up are still hazy, but with discussions of a time-jump, new secrets to unveil, and a link to Harry Potter's own narrative, there are a lot of opportunities to take advantage of. There is no doubt that Hogwarts Legacy 2 will be a major money-maker for Warner Bros. Discovery and a sign that supporting this kind of creative, open-world storytelling is critical for this franchise.

What's interesting about Hogwarts Legacy is that it failed to truly link itself or pay homage to the original Warner Bros. movies, with the title essentially existing within its own version of the Wizarding World. There are Easter eggs and nods, but many of these could be attributed to the books, rather than the cinematic blockbusters themselves. It's even more note-worthy that this lack of connection did not hamper the title. In fact, no one paid attention to Harry's absence but was instead drawn in by this unique and imaginative take on Hogwarts and its mythology.

In comparison, Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions very much sold itself on its crossover with the Harry Potter movies. The sports-based title made up for the exclusion of Quidditch in Hogwarts Legacy but paled in comparison to its predecessor's ambition and scale. Players were able to interact with key figures like Ginny Weasley, Draco Malfoy and the boy wizard himself across Harry Potter: Quidditch Champion's fast-paced matches. Yet, sales-wise, these cameos weren't enough to impress, with the title failing to perform as executives may have hoped.

The Harry Potter movies are iconic and with good reason, but there were some major changes from the books that fans still haven't forgotten.

There is a silver lining for Warner Bros. Discovery in all of this though. The plan is to, to instead place focus on the HBO TV show. That means that any future games set in the Wizarding World are much more likely to be built on the back of the streaming series, in comparison to the magical juggernauts that once dominated the box office.

Hogwarts Legacy's success, in the face of Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions' failure, is a sign that audiences are more than happy to ditch the old crew in favor of more exciting adventures. Industry talk even suggested that executives might be eyeing up a crossover between Hogwarts Legacy 2 and the Harry Potter television series, with some assuming that there will be direct links between the two to drive cross-platform promotion.

However, this close-level integration could be damaging, and it is more likely that Avalanche Studios will include costumes, character skins, and Easter eggs that pay homage to the show but do not directly link the worlds together. It seems in this instance, continuity is the enemy of creativity, and the freedom enjoyed on Hogwarts Legacy should be protected for its sequel.

Harry Potter's rise in the video game space comes at the right moment for Warner Bros. Discovery though, after a string of duds puts it in a tough position. Titles like Multiversus, Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League, Gotham Knights and Harry Potter: Quidditch Champions all show that a known brand name isn't enough to drive sales if the quality of production simply isn't there.

Hogwarts Legacy and Batman: Arkham Shadow have been two standouts for the company in a sea of underperformance, so Warner Bros. Discovery is doubling down on those intellectual properties that it feels have the potential to excel.

The world of Harry Potter is fairly airtight but there were some Muggle plot holes that fans never forgot.

Despite past hits like Middle-earth: Shadow of War, there doesn't appear to be much movement for The Lord of the Rings in this space, and other DC characters like Wonder Woman seem to have their games stuck in development hell. Mortal Kombat will continue to be a priority, but the Looney Tunes are nowhere to be seen.

Game of Thrones is also said to be getting a game of its own, but none of these plans quite compare to what executives want to do with Harry Potter, which they now view as the crown jewel and the most important IP on their roster.

, with the HBO show, Hogwarts Legacy sequel, and park expansions all putting the brand back on the map. That in turn will result in further video game projects that should meet the demands of the audience and explore other facets of this universe.

Despite the discourse surrounding the franchise as a whole, the actual mechanics of its storytelling seem more robust than ever, as audiences eagerly discuss what comes next. Obviously, Warner Bros. Discovery wants its video games to be part of that conversation, so fans should expect more announcements from the in-house studio Portkey Games in the coming years.
