Gunmen Target Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan's Family Home in Kogi

In a disturbing turn of events, the family house of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central Senatorial District, was reportedly attacked by armed men in Obeiba-Ihima, Ihima Local Government Area of Kogi State. The incident, which occurred on Tuesday, April 15, involved the vandalism of windows in her grandfather’s house. Prompt intervention by security operatives and community members is said to have prevented further damage.

Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan confirmed the attack, stating that it occurred after her younger brother brought contractors to inspect sites for upcoming projects in her senatorial district. "Two days ago, my younger brother took contractors to my hometown in Ihima to inspect sites for upcoming projects I attracted to my senatorial district. The unknown gunmen assumed I was in town and attacked my family house that night. Thankfully, the Civil Defence team and community members responded promptly and chased them off. A report was made at the police area command, and no one was hurt,” she said.

The Kogi State Police Command has acknowledged the incident. Police Commissioner Miller Dantawaye, in a statement to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), confirmed that the attack took place on Tuesday night and that an investigation is underway. "The command has been fully briefed on the unfortunate and criminal incident by the Okehi Local Government Area Divisional Police Officer. So far, no arrest has been made. Investigation into the incident has begun and we shall get to the root of it. We will deal with those criminal elements that carried out the attack," Dantawaye stated.

Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, who recently faced a six-month suspension by her colleagues and a recall attempt, condemned the attack and appealed to the Inspector General of Police to restore her security. She also suggested a potential motive, stating, "The gunmen assumed she was in town and so attacked my family house that Tuesday night,” highlighting the belief that the attackers mistakenly thought she was present.

The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has also condemned the attack, calling for a thorough investigation and the arrest of the perpetrators. In a statement, HURIWA's National Coordinator, Emmanuel Onwubiko, urged security agencies to ensure Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan's safety and address her allegations of assassination plots. “We are calling for forensic investigations and the arrest of the attackers so they face the full weight of the law. We are calling on the Inspector-General of Police and the Director General of the Department of State Services to ensure that no harm happens to Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.”

The Senator Natasha Media Office released a statement condemning the "brazen attack" and linking it to Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan's criticism of Senate President Godswill Akpabio, whom she accused of sexual harassment. The statement urged the public to remain calm and support the pursuit of justice. “This calculated assault appears to be a direct response to Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s courageous stance against Senate President Godswill Akpabio, whom she accused of sexual harassment. We urge the Inspector General of Police to immediately reinstate her security details.”
