Gunmen Kill final-year Akwa Ibom Polytechnic student
A final-year Computer Science student of Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic, identified as Prince, was shot dead by gunmen in the early hours of Wednesday in the Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area.
The attack occurred in Prince’s residence along Abuja Street, Ikot Osurua community, where he was reportedly killed in front of his girlfriend. The victim, who was awaiting mobilisation for the compulsory National Youth Service Corps, sustained a gunshot wound to the stomach.
According to a source within the polytechnic community, the gunmen gained access to the compound around 1 am and went directly to Prince’s room. The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the victim’s girlfriend raised the alarm, prompting neighbours to rush to the scene.
Prince was transported to a hospital but was confirmed dead on arrival.
A resident recalled seeing the victim just hours before the attack, describing him as a well-known figure in the community and an active member of his church’s choral group.
The Police Public Relations Officer in Akwa Ibom State, DSP Timfon John, confirmed the incident and linked the attack to a robbery and cult-related operation. “Information we have indicates that there was a robbery and cult-related operation in the vicinity. The assailants invaded the area and shot the student during the robbery. An investigation is ongoing,” he said.
The community remains in shock over the tragic incident, with many calling for heightened security in the area.
