Group partners TotalEnergies Foundation on safe mobility
TotalEnergies, in collaboration with the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), has officially launched the 2025 VIA Programme for Safe Mobility in Nigeria.
The initiative is a youth-focused road safety education programme implemented by GreenLight Initiative under the global VIA Programme and supported by the TotalEnergies Foundation.
The project aims to work closely with young people to improve the conditions in which they travel to and from school by bringing the issues to their attention and raising awareness among all members of the educational community.
The project is expected to improve road safety around school environments by engaging 600 students across Abuja, Lagos, and Rivers States, empowering them to become advocates for safe mobility within their schools and communities.
Through a structured, school-based curriculum, students will assess road safety risks in their school zones, develop actionable solutions, raise awareness through peer-led campaigns, and participate in state and national-level exhibitions and competitions.
A statement signed by Communication Lead, GreenLight Initiative, Patience Agabi said: “The VIA Programme for Safe Mobility goes beyond teaching road safety — it is about empowering young people to become advocates and leaders for safer school journeys in their communities. By giving students the tools and the platform to lead, we are investing in a safer, more inclusive mobility future for Nigeria. We are proud to be part of this effort to deliver such an impactful programme.”
Originally launched in 2018 by the TotalEnergies Foundation and the Michelin Corporate Foundation from its head office in Paris, the programme was created in response to growing concerns about mobility accidents and road crashes globally, especially those affecting children.
Manager, Education and Inclusion/ Acting GM Corporate Social Responsibility, TotalEnergies EP Nigeria Limited, Tonye Osifo, explained: “For TotalEnergies E&P Nigeria, one of our major focuses is on education, educating the children of this country in different ways.”
The VIA Programme is now active in over 12 countries and aims to educate youth aged 10–25 through interactive, context-based learning. It contributes to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs 3, 4, 11 and 17) by promoting safe, inclusive, and sustainable mobility.
