Group charges Africans to confront legacies of slavery, colonialism
The Correct Connect Africa Foundation (CCAF) has called for the confrontation of the enduring legacies of slavery in Africa.
The group made the call while announcing the 2025 edition of the Africa Memorial Day (AMD).
Executive Guardian and Chief Advocate of CCAF, Anthony Aleakwe Odior, who made the announcement, said AMD 2025 will hold with the theme, ‘Historical Consciousness and Human Justice’.
According to him, AMD 2025 calls on Africans at home and in the Diaspora to collectively remember, reflect, and rise.
He said: “Africa Memorial Day is our collective moment to speak the names of our ancestors, awaken our memory, and boldly demand justice through historical truth and cultural dignity.
“Africa Memorial Day 2025 is more than a commemoration; it is a movement, a bridge between the wounds of the past and the hopes of the future.”
He disclosed that the programme will place on Sunday, May 25, 2025, at the Oriental Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos, further describing it as a solemn and powerful call to confront the enduring legacies of slavery and colonisation, while championing truth, memory, and the continued struggle for justice and liberation for African peoples.
He said the event is expected to convene a dynamic cross-section of society, including community leaders, youth groups, academics, artists, human rights defenders, and faith-based organisations, in a rare and meaningful gathering of remembrance, healing, and education.
“The highlights of AMD 2025 include the Rite of Africa Memorial Day, a deeply symbolic and spiritual tribute honouring the memory of African ancestors lost to the horrors of slavery and colonial oppression.
“The panel discussion will feature distinguished historians, legal experts, cultural custodians, and justice advocates exploring African memory, identity, and the imperative of reparative justice.
“A vibrant showcase of music, spoken word, drama, and traditional dance that celebrates African resilience, resistance, and cultural pride will also be on display,” Odior added.
