Grandpa Records Founder Refigah Heviweit Honoured with Prestigious Paul Kagame Award in Kigali

Kenyan businessman and founder of Grandpa Records, Refigah Heviweit, alias Yusuf Noah, has once again been recognised for his impeccable work in Africa's creative economy.

In his latest and most distinguished achievement yet, Refigah was among 36 exceptional leaders across Africa feted with the Paul Kagame Transformational Leadership Medal of Honour at the 10th Edition of the Africa Institute of Public Administration (AIPA) held in Kigali, Rwanda.

The award recognises transformational leadership and impactful service to the continent.

A letter of nomination seen by TUKO.co.ke read in part:

“I am pleased to inform you that you have being nominated to receive the Paul Kagame Transformational Leadership Medal of Honour. On the 10th Session of the Transformational Leadership Summit at Olympic Hotel, Kigali. This nomination is due to your exceptional contributions and dedication in the society. We’ll be grateful if you can create time out of your busy schedule to honour this prestigious occasion and your presence will make a great impact."

In an exclusive with TUKO.co.ke, Refigah shared his reaction to the news.

“Overwhelmed with gratitude for the Paul Kagame Medal of Honour for Transformational Leadership. Truly humbled by this recognition. Grateful for the opportunity to serve and make a difference. God's time is always the best,” he said.

Refigah had recently received the esteemed Kwame Nkrumah Medal of Honour in Accra, Ghana.

The accolade celebrates individuals who have significantly advanced Africa’s creative economy through their work and impact.

In a previous exclusive with TUKO.co.ke, Refigah addressed rumours about his political ambitions and clarified his focus going forward.

He dismissed claims that he was eyeing a political seat, insisting that his commitment to service goes beyond holding public office.

According to him, leadership is about continuously working for the people, regardless of titles or positions.

He asserted that his priority is addressing the urgent needs facing communities today.

Touching on the creative sector, Refigah spoke passionately about the potential of Africa’s creative economy.

He noted that globally, the creative industry is becoming a major employer, citing data from the United States where arts and culture contributed over $1 trillion to the GDP in 2022.

Despite this growth, he observed that Africa remains underrepresented, benefiting from only a small share of the global creative economy.

Refigah emphasised the need for the continent to transition from being consumers to producers in the space.

He revealed that he is currently collaborating with various governments and organisations across Africa to develop effective structures aimed at transforming and supporting the continent’s creative industry.
