Govt to rebuild homes, pay medical bills for Mathare fire victims - CS Ruku
The government will foot all medical and mortuary expenses for victims of the Mathare 4B fire tragedy that left six people dead and scores displaced, Cabinet Secretary for Public Service, Human Capital Development and Special Programmes Geoffrey Ruku has announced.
Ruku, who visited the scene on Wednesday, said the State would also supply building materials to families who lost their homes, and extend support to reconstruct two churches that were gutted by the blaze.
“It is the government’s duty to ensure the safety and well-being of its citizens. That is why the President and his Deputy have sent me here, not only to offer condolences but to deliver tangible support,” CS Ruku said.
He was accompanied by Mathare MP Anthony Oluoch during the visit, which also saw the distribution of emergency food supplies and essential household items to affected families.
Despite efforts by five firefighting trucks from the Nairobi County Government, the fire left a trail of destruction.
The CS pointed to infrastructural challenges in informal settlements—like congested structures, narrow roads, and poor drainage—as key obstacles to emergency response.
“The tragedy is painful, but we want to ensure those affected can begin to rebuild their lives with dignity and support,” he added.
Ruku said the national government is working closely with Nairobi County to strengthen safety systems and improve infrastructure to prevent future disasters.
He also reiterated the government’s broader commitment to upgrading informal settlements through initiatives such as the Mukuru Affordable Housing Project.
“These projects aim to uplift the living standards of slum residents and reduce vulnerability to tragedies like the one experienced in Mathare,” Ruku said.
MP Oluoch praised the government’s swift intervention, saying it demonstrated a strong commitment to protecting Kenyans in times of crisis.
