Governors Expected to Defect to APC

The All Progressives Congress (APC) is experiencing a surge in membership as prominent political figures from opposition parties defect to the ruling party. The wave of defections includes governors and other high-profile politicians, signaling a potential shift in the political landscape ahead of the 2027 general election. Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori's move to the APC, along with his cabinet, underscores this trend. Nasarawa Governor Abdullahi Sule has indicated that more governors are expected to join the APC, citing President Bola Tinubu's leadership and reforms as a major draw.

Governor Sule highlighted the admiration many politicians have for President Tinubu, stating that they feel "accepted" by him. This sentiment has fueled interest in joining the APC. The defection of Governor Oborevwori, along with his predecessor Ifeanyi Okowa, marks a significant shift in Delta State politics. Information Commissioner Charles Aniagwu emphasized the need for collaboration to build a state that all Deltans can be proud of as a key reason for the defection.

In Kano State, APC National Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje welcomed defectors from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), including Senator Kawu Sumaila, former Speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly Kabiru Alhassan Rurum, and other former state officials. Ganduje expressed confidence in the APC's victory in the 2027 general election. Sumaila explained that his decision to leave the NNPP was driven by the desire to advance development in his constituency, emphasizing the importance of negotiations and seeking the best outcomes for the community.

Ajibola Basiru, APC National Secretary, likened the party to Jehovah's Witnesses, highlighting the party's efforts to build a functional and efficient structure at every level. Ganduje reiterated that more governors are expected to join the APC and expressed confidence in the party's ability to win future elections. The new members from Kano, including former members of the House of Representatives and House of Assembly, have pledged to work for the success of the APC at both the state and national levels.

Ganduje has confidently predicted that the APC's victory in the 2027 general elections is assured. He emphasized the party's belief in President Tinubu's economic reforms and the Renewed Hope Agenda, which aims to attract more followers to the party. The APC's strategy involves both democratically winning elections, as seen in Edo State, and convincing elected officials to join the party through advocacy and dialogue. The recent defections from the PDP in Delta State, including the governor, cabinet members, and state representatives, exemplify this approach.
