Ghanaian neighborhoods set to clash in Ramadan Cup

Football passion is set to ignite the Zongo communities once again as the 10th edition of the Sheikh Sharubutu Ramadan Cup commences this Saturday, April 12, at Kawukudi Park in Accra. The opening match will feature a highly anticipated clash between Nima and Sabon Zongo. This fixture, confirmed at the official draw in Accra, pits two of Ghana’s most traditional Zongo strongholds against each other.

This year’s tournament is a special commemorative event, marking a decade of celebrating the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu. Over the past nine years, the Ramadan Cup has been a unifying force, bringing together youth from various regions for spirited and peaceful football competitions at the end of Ramadan.

In a departure from previous years, the 10th-anniversary tournament will feature only 15 teams, a reduction from the usual 32. Participating teams were selected based on their merit, history, and performance in past tournaments. Organisers have indicated that the selection includes former champions, founding members, and standout performers.

Another significant change is the venue. Traditionally held at Fadama Park, near the residence of the National Chief Imam, the tournament has been moved to Kawukudi Park in Kanda due to ongoing renovations at Fadama.

Defending champions Ashaiman, who have won the trophy three times, received a bye into the second round during the live draw. Other seeded teams include former winners Madina, Nima, Mamobi, and Kasoa.

"Interestingly, the first-round draw has pitted two traditional Zongos together, Nima and Sabon Zongo, for the tournament's opening fixture," organisers noted, highlighting the intense but friendly rivalry expected to kick off the event.

The Sheikh Sharubutu Ramadan Cup continues to attract significant attention, with high-profile personalities from the football fraternity, religious leaders, and key figures from Zongo communities expected to attend. The National Chief Imam is also expected to grace the opening ceremony.
