Ghana Sets Final 5G Deadline for NGIC, Threatens License Review
The ultimatum follows NGIC’s failure to meet prior deadlines in November 2024 and June 2025.
At a July 4 press briefing in Accra, George confirmed no further extensions would be granted. “If NGIC fails to meet this commitment, we will immediately initiate license review proceedings,” he stated. The Minister acknowledged NGIC’s deployment of 16 5G-ready sites and National Communications Authority approval for core infrastructure but emphasized urgent progress is needed.
NGIC must activate 50 operational 5G sites across Accra and Kumasi by December 2025. These cities anchor the government’s strategy to provide early high-speed access. George stressed the rollout’s critical role in Ghana’s digital economy, enabling IoT applications, telemedicine, and reduced data costs.
The national 5G strategy prioritizes infrastructure efficiency and universal access. “This model avoids duplication, lowers costs, and accelerates connectivity for all Ghanaians,” George explained. The Ministry maintains close oversight to ensure transparency and operational efficiency.
