The incident occurred as Delhi and the National Capital Region were hit by intense rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds Friday morning. The downpour brought relief from the ongoing heatwave but also caused widespread disruption across the city. Strong gusts—reaching up to 78 kmph in some areas—were recorded between 5:30 am and 5:50 am. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said more rain and thunderstorms are likely through the day, warning of possible damage to trees, power lines, and poorly maintained structures.

The storm led to a metal structure collapsing at Terminal 3 of Delhi Airport, while several key routes, including areas near the Akshardham flyover, faced severe waterlogging.
